An impromptu gathering brought out hundreds of are residents in support of a young T.R. Miller High School student injured in a Friday night game.
Ken Lett Jr., a sophomore at T.R. Miller, suffered from a broken neck on the opening play of the game in Mobile against UMS-Wright. The injury resulted in a ride to a Mobile hospital by ambulance and a nearly four hour surgery to treat Lett for the injury.
Lee Jernigan, pastor at Alco Baptist Church, gathered members of his musical team and quickly organized a community singing at Market Park in downtown Brewton on Sunday afternoon.
Community members — including T.R. Miller and W.S. Neal families — gathered by the hundreds to come together for prayer and contributions to help the family as Lett recovers from the injury.
“It just came to me in the shower this morning (Sunday),” Jernigan said. “We have to do something. I contacted the group and it was on from there.”
Word of the even quickly spread across social media and the result was a park filled with prayers, praise and singing — all in support of the Lett family.
W.S. Neal Principal Todd Williamson was among those attending the gathering.
“This is one of our kids,” Williamson said. “When something like this happens, we are all family. It may be different on the field, but here we are all pulling for one of our kids.”
Jernigan reported on Monday that the event turned into a huge blessing for the Lett family.
“Thank you to the Brewton and East Brewton community for the outreached helping hand that was extended to the Lett family last night (Sunday),” Jernigan posted to social media. “The attendance was amazing, and the offerings totaled over $9,000 in gifts and monetary donations! This act of love far exceeded anything that was expected, but with God, miracles shouldn’t surprise us!”
Lett remained in a Mobile hospital as of press time with family and friends visiting during his recovery.
For those unable to attend Sunday’s gathering who would like to make a contribution to help with financial strains for the Lett family, donations can be made by contacting Lee Jernigan 251-363-0371 or the Alco Baptist Church at 251-867-6643.
