In the opening play of a football game in Mobile, T.R. Miller Tiger Ken Lett Jr.’s night ended and a new journey began for the sophomore player.
Lett was injured in the opening play when he received the kick-off ball and made a 22-yard gain only to be stopped by a UMS-Wright player. When he hit the ground, he wouldn’t move again until ambulance crews loaded him into their vehicle.
Lett, who underwent surgery at a Mobile Hospital Friday night, suffered from a broken neck. Surgeons reported that the surgery went well, but only time would tell just how severe the injury would be.
T.R. Miller Head Coach Brent Hubbert visited the injured player on Tuesday morning and said the news was mostly good.
“Lett is in a rest and recovery stage,” Hubbert said Tuesday “He is tired at times, but very upbeat when visitors are in the room. He has touch and feel sensations in upper and lower extremities which is a great sign. Also, he has some movement in the arms.”
Lett was surrounded by prayer even before he left the field as members of both teams gathered near the ambulance to pray.
A community-wide outpouring of support has been shown for the TRM student with a Sunday evening time of prayer and fund raising for the family and other fund raising events planned in the coming days and weeks across the community.
Reports indicate that Lett is making progress in his recovery and may be transferred to an Atlanta, Ga., hospital in the coming days to continue treatment.
