WSNs Eagles fall to Fairfield, 23-22; play off run over

The W.S. Neal Eagles took an early lead over Fairfield’s Tigers Friday night in East Brewton bringing their first score with 3:50 left in the first quarter. A two-point conversion failed leaving the Eagles with 6.
An on-side kick by the Tigers was recovered by Easton Grace for the Eagles, but WSN couldn’t make good on the gifted possession as the first quarter ends.
After punting the ball back to the Tigers, the offense would have no luck finding the end zone. But, the Eagles would take advantage of a play and make a safety adding two points to their lead. Early in the second quarter, the Eagles are up, 8-0.
Fairfield takes the ball but can’t make much progress against a determined Eagle defense. With little luck on carries, the Tigers are forced to give the ball back to W.S. Neal.
With just 5:54 left in the half, W.S. Neal makes good on the possession and finds the end zone again. A two-point conversion is good and the Eagle lead is 16-0.
It would be late in the half before Fairfield finds the end zone on a one-yard run. A two-point conversion is successful and the Tigers put 8 points on the board.
As the half-time buzzer sounds, W.S. Neal holds their lead over Fairfield, 16-8.
The third quarter of the game would be a lot of back-and-forth for both teams but Fairfield would find the mark just five seconds before the end of the quarter. A 25-yard touchdown run puts six on the board and a two-point conversion puts a tie score on the board, 16-16.
Taking a tie into the final quarter of play, it would be late in the quarter before another score goes on the board. With just over five minutes left to play, Fairfield finds the end zone and makes a good PAT kick to go up over the Eagles, 23 to 16.
With 1:29 left in the game, the Eagles find the end zone and put 6 points on the board. A two-point conversion fails and the Tigers hold on to the lead, 23-22.
After an off-sides penalty against the Eagles puts the kick 15-yards further down field, the Eagles attempt an on-side kick that is quickly recovered by the Tigers.
As the clock ticks down the final seconds of the game, the W.S. Neal Eagles fall to the Fairfield Tigers, 23-22.
Fairfield will advance to the third round of the Class 4A AHSAA Play Offs next Friday. Opponent to be determined.
