Tigers fall at home to end season

The T.R. Miller Tigers played host to the Houston Academy Raiders Friday night in Brewton in the Class 3A Play Offs, Round 3.

The Tigers worked against the Raiders in the first half of play giving up 7 points early in the first quarter. That would be their only score of the half as a tough Tiger defense worked to keep them out of the end zone again.

The Tigers would get their only first-half score in the second quarter on a run by Myles Johnson after a big gain by QB Nathan Commander.

The Raiders would get the ball back on the kick and would make big strides down to the red zone threatening another score with less than 40 seconds in the half.

J.J. Griffey would reach up and snag a Raider pass to get the ball back in Tiger possession. Getting off two plays before the buzzer, the Tigers fail to find the end zone.

The score was tied 7-all at the half.

The Raiders got the ball on the kick to begin the second half after deferring at the toss to start the game. The Raiders quarterback suffered an injury late in the first half of play and didn’t make a return to the field to start the half. The Raiders find difficulty in a refreshed Tiger defense and fail to make good on the possession, punting the ball back to the Tigers.

As the Tigers take possession, steady movement downfield puts them on the move and Johnson gets the ball into the red zone. But the Raider defense stopped any further progression and the Tigers are forced to turn the ball over on downs deep in Raider territory.

It would punts all around early in the fourth quarter with neither team making big gains.

After a Tiger punt, the Raiders take control again and get into the red zone within 10 yards of the goal line. The Raiders would have difficulty getting to the end zone and settled for a field goal taking the lead, 10-7.

The Tigers would work their next possession to their advantage finding several first downs and the end zone during their time with the ball. A Johnson TD and a good PAT by Garrison Little puts the Tigers in the lead for the first time, 14-10.

The Raiders answered quickly using only three plays to get into the end zone after the Tiger kick. With a good PAT, the Raiders re-gained the lead, 17-14.

The Tigers put all of their efforts on the field and worked to get the ball down into Raider territory, but the clock would be an enemy along with the Raider defenders. With a game deciding pass, Nathan Commander shoots the ball into the end zone, but the ball is picked off by a Raider.

With the clock showing double-zeros, the game ends the season of the T.R. Miller Tigers who fall in the third round of play offs, 17 to 14.
