Dr. Marsha Raulerson has assumed the roll of Escambia County’s Medical Examiner following the death of her husband and former ME, Dan Raulerson.
Dr. Jimmy Adkisson reported the information during Monday’s meeting of the Escambia County Commission.
“When we polled our members to get input on who would be medical examiner, no one wanted the position except Dr. Marsha,” Adkisson told commissioners.
Dan Raulerson had served as the county’s medical examiner for a number of years until his death in late 2024. Marsha Raulerson, who has served the community as a pediatrician for decades, will now take on those responsibilities in Escambia County.
According to Alabama Law, the county medical examiner is appointed by the senior state medical examiner in Region IV of the Alabama Department of Forensic Sciences. The appointment shall be made, with the approval of the Director of the Alabama Department of Forensic Sciences, from a list of qualified physicians submitted by the Escambia County Medical Society after review by the district attorney of the county.
The Escambia County Medical Society currently has four or five remaining members according to Adkisson.
“We used to be very active,” Adkisson said. “Every physician is asked to join. We have been all but defunct for some time — we’ve gone 20 or so years without a meeting. But, we could meet at anytime for any reason.”
Adkisson also addressed Commissioners to question if any appointees have been considered for the vacant seat on the Escambia County Healthcare Authority.
“Our system continues to deteriorate,” Adkisson said. “How long before you are able to act on those seats?”
Commission Chairman Raymond Wiggins said the two vacant positions — one in Dist. 2 and one in Dist. 5 — are being considered.
“We are not in a crisis mode at this time,” Wiggins said. “We’re working on it and will fill those as soon as possible.”
Adkisson also reported that Dr. Harrington, a local physician, has experienced health issues and will be out of practice for a period of time, further crippling the health care available locally.
