A group of Brewton residents is making big plans for a recognizable patch of green in our community - and their work will be beneficial to all of us.
The city's Quality of Life Committee, an active outgrowth of Brewton's commitment to the Alabama Communities of Excellence program, has announced plans to improve Burnt Corn Creek Park.
Their impressive goals include a bandstand, outdoor &#8220lawn chair” theater, concession stand and welcome center. The group looked at several similar parks in communities around the South and took their inspiration from a small-town park in Leper's Fork, Tenn., that uses log-cabin-like structures.
As Quality of Life Committee Chairwoman Carol Gordy said, the design will fit in with our community's timber history and be a &#8220testament” to the industries that built this town.
The plans for Burnt Corn Creek Park are ambitious - and come with an overall price tag of an estimated $1.5 million - but they are not without great thought and consideration. Committee members believe they can tackle each project in phases, and they have plans for fundraisers as well.
The first is a Songwriters Festival. Auditions begin this week, with the festival itself scheduled for Feb. 24. The auditions are open to the public, with the $5 admission fee going to the park plans, and the Songwriters Festival will be open to the public as well.
Meanwhile, committee members will be asking local businesses to help fund the park project, with different levels of giving corresponding to different acknowledgements at the park.
