Brewton Police officers took a short run on foot Thursday morning as they apprehended a drug suspect.
Darrell Stuart Lane of 705 Gillis St. in East Brewton was taken into custody following a brief pursuit on foot in the Alco Drive area.
Officers with the Brewton Police Department attempted to make a traffic stop on a 1986 Monte Carlo on Alco Drive. The car stopped on the campus of Jefferson Davis Community College. When police discovered Lane's identity, he fled the location on foot.
Police pursued and captured Lane a short distance from the initial stop near the water tank on the JDCC campus.
After a search of the vehicle, officers found eight bags of powder cocaine and nine bags of crack cocaine, police said.
A set of scales was also discovered under the hood of the automobile. Once Lane was captured, officers said they recovered more than $800 from his pockets.
He was then transported to the Escambia County Detention Center, where he was charged with trafficking powder cocaine and trafficking crack cocaine. He is being held on a $100,000 bond.
The arrest and charges were made by agents of the 21st Judicial Circuit Drug Task Force. The task force is composed of the Escambia County Sheriff's Department as well as police departments in Brewton, East Brewton, Atmore, Flomaton and Poarch; the Escambia County District Attorney's office and the Escambia County Commission.
The task force receives half of its funding from a grand provided by the Bureau of Justice Affairs Division of the United States Department of Justice. The grant is administered by the Alabama Department of Economic and Community Affairs. The remainder of funding provided to the Task Force is provided by the Escambia County Sheriff's Department, Brewton and Atmore Police Departments and the Escambia County District Attorney's office.
