It may have been the first half that put the Jefferson Davis Community College Warhawks in a hole, but it was the first eight minutes of the second half that ultimately sealed their fate in Thursday's 73-61 road loss to the Southern Union Bison.
The Bison (4-6 overall and 1-0 in the Alabama Community College Conference) took an 18-13 lead through the first 10 minutes and widened the cushion to 40-25 at halftime.
Southern Union left the door open for a rally in the first eight minutes of the second half when it missed its first nine shots and committed five turnovers.
The Bison scored just four points during that stretch, but JDCC (2-10 overall and 0-2 in the ACCC) failed to make up any ground and still found themselves down 15 points, 44-29.
The Warhawks did cut the lead to nine with three minutes left, but missed a chance to cut the gap to only seven when they missed a pair of free throws on a three-shot trip to the line.
Tim Rodgers led JDCC with 18 points, 14 of which came in the second half. Norman Griffin added 15.
The Warhawks continue ACCC south division action Tuesday when they host Alabama Southern at 7 p.m. in a game moved from Monroeville.
