Tax season isn't necessarily welcomed by everyone, but a group of area volunteers is trying to make it an easier time for seniors and low-income families.
The Escambia County Retired Senior Volunteer Program is conducting its free tax preparation assistance for seniors, a service that has been going on for two decades in our community.
While the service is mainly offered to seniors, low-income families and disabled individuals can also qualify for assistance.
The RSVP volunteers have been trained and are up to date on the latest tax laws and the proper procedures for filing returns. Returns are prepared and filed electronically at no charge to the taxpayer.
This is a great service for the people in our community who need it most, and we're proud that the volunteers are able to provide assistance. Last year, 200 taxpayers received help; RSVP officials expect even more this year.
One thing to remember: Walk-ins are welcome, but those with appointments and the elderly take precedence over anyone else seeking assistance.
Both Brewton and Flomaton are offering sites for assistance. The Brewton assistance center is located at the Brewton Public Library and operates from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays and from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturdays. The Flomaton assistance center is located at the Flomaton United Methodist Church on Palafox Street. Hours of operation in Flomaton are from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Wednesdays and from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturdays.
We hope those who need the help most will take advantage of it. This is a great service provided by hard-working volunteers in our community.
