A joint kick-off event has been planned to benefit Brewton and East Brewton and Riverview residents with installed smoke alarms for their homes.
The Center for Disease Control and Prevention funding grant has been awarded to both Brewton and East Brewton Fire Departments. As a result of the grant, each department will be able to supply a number of residents with installed smoke alarms to aid in fire deaths and injuries.
The East Brewton Fire Department will be holding their kick-off event in an area adjacent to East Brewton Plaza near Fred's.
Shipp said fire department personnel would install the alarms at no cost to the homeowner.
East Brewton Fire Chief Joey Shell, Shipp and other department personnel will be on hand for the event.
The Brewton Fire Department will be set up on Saturday as well for the same purpose as East Brewton.
Both departments will offer hot dogs and other refreshments for those who drop by their sites. Fire trucks will be on display as well as goodies for children who come by the special event.
The kick-off event was scheduled as a joint effort of both departments in order to bring awareness to the need of smoke alarms in all homes Weaver said.
