Nobody knows how the rest of the Alabama Community College Conference season will go for the Jefferson Davis Community College Warhawks, but one thing is for sure. The start of this year's ACCC season is a lot better than last year.
Last year the Warhawks buried themselves early in the race when they lost their first seven league games and 14 of their first 15. JDCC began this year's league season with a three-game sweep at Wallace State-Selma.
The Warhawks (7-4-1) began the three-game series with a 6-4, come-from-behind win Friday.
Wallace State-Selma took a 4-3 lead into the top of the ninth, but Jeremy White singled and Wade Schepper was hit by a pitch with one out to give the Warhawks a life. Steven Bingert flew out for the second out, but David Washington was hit by a pitch to fill the bases.
The Warhawks tied the game at 4-4 when Jesse Edwards reached on an infield error. Ryan Kelley gave JDCC its margin of victory one batter later when he delivered a two-run single.
Michael Maraldo got the win, as he threw four scoreless and hitless innings of relief to get the win. Maraldo fanned four during his stint.
White had three hits to lead JDCC at the plate, while Kelley added a pair.
The Warhawks swept a doubleheader Saturday with a 4-3, nine-inning victory in the opener and a 9-1 triumph in the nightcap.
JDCC broke the deadlock in the top of the ninth in game one when Edwards doubled to lead off the frame. He later scored on a one-out single by Ryan Gray.
Joshua Presley, the second of three JDCC hurlers, got the win with one and two-thirds innings of scoreless relief. Adam Reed worked around two defensive errors in the bottom of the ninth to preserve the win and get a save.
Edwards, Gray and Bingert all had two hits to lead the Warhawks hitting.
After back-to-back nailbiters, JDCC had a much easier time in the finale although it still took until the middle innings for the Warhawks to pull away.
JDCC had just a 2-1 lead headed into the fourth inning before it plated a pair of runs in each of the next three frames.
Kyle Snedeker had a pair of singles and two RBIs to lead JDCC, while J.J. Cutler added a single, a double and an RBI. Kelley had a double and two RBIs, while Bingert contributed a single and also drove in two runs.
Justin Bailey went the distance on a three-hitter for the victory, as he struck out eight and walked only one.
The Warhawks, who played a twinbill at Jones County, Miss. Tuesday, swing back into ACCC action Friday when they host Bishop State at 1 p.m.
