Former JDCC infielder wins SSAC Player of the Week
Former Jefferson Davis Community College Lady Warhawks softball player Lakyn Newton recently received the Southern States Athletic Conference and Region Player of the Week Award.
Newton, a junior first baseman for Shorter College in Rome, Ga., hit .579 during a six-game stretch the award period covered with 11 hits in 19 at-bats. Newton also had two doubles, a homerun and eight RBIs.
Newton, a graduate of Greenville High School, is hitting .427 for the season with four homeruns and 25 RBIs.
Newton was an All-Alabama Community College Conference South Division First Team pick and an All-Region 22 Second Team selection last season at JDCC when she won the team's Triple Crown for best batting average, most homeruns and most RBIs. Newton led JDCC in nine offensive categories overall last season.
Newton's current contributions are for a Shorter team
that leads the SSAC with a
17-3 record and stands 30-4 overall.
