As campsites were completed and opening ceremonies began, hundreds of Relay for Life team and audience members recognized those who walked in the Survivors Lap. The annual 2007 Survivors Lap was led by Dan Shaddock and is considered the official kick-off to the 12-hour day of events held Saturday on the Brewton YMCA campus.
Prior to opening ceremonies, a Survivors Luncheon was held at the pavilion on the Brewton YMCA campus.
Bentley Martin and Paula Gerety served as co-mistresses of ceremony for the event, which ended at Midnight Saturday
Huff said teams participating this year had turned in $43,000 at Thursday's Bank Night event.
Although no specific goal was set for this year's Relay event, the teams have made a great effort to collect funds that will benefit the American Cancer Society.
Huff said neither the team representing Brewton Middle School nor the Clean Up for Cancer team reported their collection amounts Thursday.
Earlier, Robin Griffin, sponsor of the Brewton Middle School team, indicated the group had raised close to $3,000 for the event.
With 12 teams participating in this year's event, the number of members was unexpected by organizers.
Some of the activities those team members participated in during the event have become favorites for those who participate in Relay and for those who just come to watch the activities.
Other activites planned included an egg toss, a cake walk and the Newlywed Game.
Most of the competition during the event was held after press time. Results of the Idol competition and the Womanless Beauty pageant, as well as photos from the event, can be seen in the Wednesday edition of The Brewton Standard.
