Opera to visit Brewton

A chance visit to a Mobile Opera performance last fall prompted a conversation that has culminated in a group of directors and performers sharing their talents in Brewton Tuesday.
The event will be hosted at Jefferson Davis Community College and is co-hosted by the college and the Brewton Council of the Arts. There is no charge to attend the performance that is open to the public.
Dr. Dan Bain, JDCC president, said the idea for the presentation by Mobile Opera members came unexpectedly.
“Last fall, I decided to attend a performance of the Mobile Opera and called for tickets,” Bain said. “The artistic director, Andy Anderson, actually answered the phone and we talked and visited during that call.”
Bain said the conversation evolved into a request for the group to consider making an educational appearance in Brewton.
“I asked him if they would consider doing an outreach program for education like some other opera companies have done,” Bain said. “He said he would love to and would talk with me more about doing that for us in the spring.”
Spring has arrived and Bain said the event will be fun, relaxing and educational for area residents.
“This performance will give people in our community an opportunity to learn more about opera,” Bain said. “It will be a bit of an introduction to opera and will highlight information about Mobile Opera’s upcoming season.”
The event will begin at 6:30 p.m. in the Neal Auditorium on the JDCC campus. The presentation is expected to last an hour, Bain said.
“I really thought this would be a fun thing for our community,” Bain said. “For people who are curious or want to learn more about opera, this should be very interesting. For those who already know about opera, this will be an opportunity to support the arts.”
Bain said the partnership in co-sponsoring the event is one he is happy about.
“When I contacted the Brewton Council of the Arts about the possibility of being a co-sponsor, they were happy to be a part of it,” Bain said. “I thought this would be something fun and different for our community and they were pleased to be a co-sponsor for the event.”
Brewton Council of the Arts members have planned light refreshments in the lobby of the auditorium prior to the presentation.
