WSN's Cooper starts in Alabama victory
W.S. Neal Blue Eagles left tackle Jared Cooper made plenty of contributions for Alabama in its 51-14 thumping of Mississippi in Saturday's annual all-star game between the two states.
Cooper started the game and played more than two quarters. His blocking helped Alabama rack up 486 yards of total offense, 255 of which came on the ground.
Alabama already had a 17-7 lead at halftime before it outscored Mississippi 34-7 in the second half.
Prattville quarterback Larry Smith completed 12 of 26 passes for 193 yards and two touchdowns to lead Alabama. Houston Academy running back Stanley Jones led the ground game with 59 yards on nine attempts.
TRM's Gomez to play in North-South Game
T.R. Miller Tiger Justin Gomez has been added to the South roster for the June 15 North-South All-Star Football Game that will be played at Huntsville.
Gomez was added to the squad as a linebacker. Gomez was a Class 4A Honorable Mention choice on the Alabama Sports Writers Association All-State Team last fall. He also led the T.R. Miller ground game with 810 yards and 26 touchdowns.
Alabama Southern leads ACCC team
Division champ Alabama Southern dominated the All-Alabama Community College Conference South Division First Team with four of the 11 selections although the Player of the Year award went to L.B. Wallace's Clayton Conner.
Alabama Southern was represented on the squad by Derek Hanks, Kevin Orso, Josh Pitts and Jonathan Stephens. Others on the First Team included Chattahoochee Valley's Chris Banker and Alex Montes, Southern Union's Danny Davidson, Wallace State-Dothan's Ernesto Gonzales, Cody Shields, and Faulkner State's Joel Beason.
Braves fall in advanced Babe Ruth League play
Although they had a 6-2 advantage in hits, it was not enough to prevent the Braves from a 3-2 loss to Covington County Saturday in an Advanced Babe Ruth League game played at Atmore.
William Shell allowed all three Covington County runs and took the loss although just one of the runs he allowed was earned. Shell had three strikeouts in five innings of work.
Shell, Grant DeFrancisco, Jake Dixon, Becker Denton, Josh Sawyer and Jimmy Conner all had one hit for the Braves.
James Hamric had the lone RBI for the Braves.
