WSNMS baseball sweeps Excel in 2014 opener Thursday

The W.S. Neal Middle School baseball team earned a two-game sweep of the Excel Panthers Thursday at home to start their 2014 season with a 2-0 record.
The WSNMS Eagles claimed a 9-4 win over the Panthers in game one and finished off the sweep with a 5-3 win in game two.
W.S. Neal will host Monroe County Monday at home in another doubleheader. Game time is set for 4 p.m. in Brewton.
Game one: WSNMS 9, Excel 4
Despite getting only two hits in the 9-4 win in game one, WSNMS benefited from nine walks and a seven-run third inning to get the five-run win.
Both the Eagles and Panthers scored two runs each in the first inning to get tied 2-all after one inning of play. After a scoreless second inning, W.S. Neal scored seven runs in the third inning to grab a 9-2 lead. Excel plated one run each in the fourth and fifth innings to cut the lead to 9-4, but W.S. Neal was able to get the win by five.
Matt Hutchins got the start on the mound and the win as he went four innings and allowed three hits, three runs, walked four, struck out three and hit one.
Westin Riddle went the final inning and allowed no hits, one runs, walked one and struck out none.
At the plate for W.S. Neal, Kristian Taylor had a double and one RBI while Hunter Revel added a three-run double in the third inning.
Game two: WSNMS 5, Excel 3
In game two Thursday, W.S. Neal used a three-run third inning to break a 1-all tie and held on for the 5-3 win to get the sweep of the Panthers.
Both teams scored one run each in the first inning and went scoreless in the second inning. In the third inning, W.S. Neal scored three runs to take a 4-1 lead. After taking a 5-1 lead in the bottom of the fourth, Excel cut W.S. Neal’s lead to 5-3 in the top of the fifth with two runs. That would be as close as the Panthers would get as W.S. Neal grabbed the two-run win.
Jacobey Hawthorne earned the win on the mound for W.S. Neal as he went the complete game five innings and allowed four hits, three runs, walked six and struck out four.
At the plate, Hawthorne had a single while Connor Huskey added a double. Brandon Moye added a double and a single and had two RBIs in the win.
