“Don’t say we didn’t warn you.”

That’s the advice that Brewton Police Chief Monte McGougin is giving motorists after announcing his department has received $11,500 in grant funds for a “click it or ticket” campaign.

Beginning Friday, McGougin said extra police patrols will be on the road as law enforcement agencies share in an award from the governor’s office to make Alabama roadways safer during the coming days.

The funds will cover overtime pay for police officers as they emphasize enforcement of the state’s seat belt laws by conducting safety checkpoints and increasing the number of patrols on Alabama roads.

“Our officers are going to be out and about, and we’re asking all residents to obey the traffic laws,” McGougin said. “That means get your tag and insurance up-to-date, if it’s not already, and make sure you are obeying speed limits and wearing your seat belt.”

McGougin said that increased patrols and roadblocks on the area’s main arteries are planned.

“You will see increased personnel on the roads,” McGougin said. “There will be our regular shift officers, and then we’re going to add three or four others who are doing nothing but working traffic violations.”

The Alabama Department of Economic and Community Affairs grant will cover the overtime through April 30, McGougin said.

“Officers will be looking for any traffic violations – speeding, child restraints, seat belts, the works,” he said. “And this will be the first session of many throughout the rest of the year.”
