The state school board Thursday passed a proposal that would ban post-secondary workers from holding office after 2010.
The practice has been called “double-dipping” by Gov. Bob Riley. Democrats and Alabama Education Association officials opposed the ban.
Thirteen legislators would have been affected by the ban had it been implemented immediately.
The state school board also voted to require current community college employees serving in the legislature to use accrued leave time in order to fulfill their obligations in Montgomery.
