Some 60 geocaching enthusiasts – one as far away as Birmingham – made their way to Brewton Saturday for the Burnt Corn Creek Cache Flow event.
Organizers said they were thrilled with the turnout, which allowed participants to find items using GPS coordinates.
“We’re thrilled to be here,” said Kate Richerson. “We’re from Uriah Baptist Church. When I heard them talking about coming here and what was going on, I said they had to count me in.”
Katie Blansit of Crestview, Fla., said that geocaching, which is the recreational activity of hunting for and finding a hidden object by means of GPS coordinates posted on a website.
Participants new to the adventure can log onto geocaching.com to get instructions, tips and coordinates for stashes.
“What I love about geocaching is that it’s a cheap, free activity that gets us and our children out into the woods,” said Katie Blansit, who traveled from Crestview, Fla., Saturday with a friend and three children. “All you need is a map and a GPS device and you’re ready to go. We like to take lunch and make a day of it.”
The fun followed on Sunday when some 30 geocachers traveled Burnt Corn Creek and cleaned up the banks.
