In late October of 1964, fall elections were on the minds of many people. I am not sure if it had anything to do with the elections, but Flomaton was in the news as being a railway stop of Lady Bird Johnson. Now it was probably not an accident that President Johnson’s wife just happened to come through and stop in Flomaton.
Another article in the newspaper told the story of a group of Brewton residents (mostly women) who had set up headquarters in the old part of The Bank of Brewton. They were there to spread the news about the Republican candidate for President, Barry Goldwater. If it was set up before the train carrying Mrs. Johnson, she must have gotten an eye full when the train came through Brewton.
In the local news, there was a photograph of East Brewton City Council members, some of them newly elected. Included in the photo were Jack McGowin, Henry Harold Jr., Hugh Fountain, Harold Douglas, Yancey Mantel, Maury Weaver and Mayor Aubrey Langham. Some of these names are familiar to me and I am sure they are to those who have lived in Brewton or East Brewton for a long time.
Building plans for the new junior college were announced and revealed, along with the announcement that Woodfin Patterson would be taking the job as president of the college.
Besides advertisements for food items the Piggly Wiggly was holding drawings each week for customers to try and win cash prizes. The amount was $125, going up $50 each week there was no winner. It was also noted that one of the sale items of the week was bacon 59 cents for a pound. A bit different these days. I paid more than $4 for even less than a pound last week.
Everage’s had an ad for a sale on new dresses. The dress was available in three colors, brick red, crayon blue and Spanish Teal. It only cost $11.98. In the same paper, Brewton Fashion Outlet did them one better and offered dresses for $5 each.
It was noted in one of the October issues of the newspaper that there had been an increase in the use of the public library. That does not surprise me in the least. I love the library and it is so much more than it used to be. Not only can you borrow books, but you can get DVDs, make use of the computers and many other things that they offer these days. I could easily spend a lot of time there.
Container Corporation of America announced in one issue that they were having an open house. For those of you who do not know, the name has changed several times since then and is now known as Georgia-Pacific.
Danley’s Furniture ran an ad with occasional chairs for $29 and a four-piece sectional sofa for $188.
In school news, the T. R. Miller Tigers beat the Atmore Blue Devils 39-6, and W.S. Neal beat the Walnut Hill team 34-0. Way to go teams.
