Jefferson Davis Community College welcomed 1,385 students this fall — 12 percent more than last year.
School officials attributed the sharp increase to new offerings such as a nursing class on the Atmore campus and dual enrollment at area high schools.
Dean of Student Affairs David Jones said he attributes the enrollment increase to the new nursing class on the Atmore campus, dual enrollment offerings at area highs schools, and workforce training.
Area high schools have sent a significant number of students to the college. The largest enrollment increase was from W.S. Neal High School, which had a 23 percent increase, college spokeswoman Sherry Martin said.
Just this fall, JDCC announced a new partnership with Montgomery-based Huntingdon College, which will begin offering a business degree program as soon as early 2008 at the JDCC campus. Students with college credit will be able to take Huntingdon classes at JDCC.
Jefferson Davis Community College also offers a wide range of courses that are offered during the day and evening as well as on-line.
The school’s main campus is in Brewton, and a satellite campus is located in Atmore.
