Cleanup remains under way for a hazardous material spill on Hwy. 41 North, and motors should continue to avoid the area.

Just before 9 a.m. Thursday, a semi-truck, bound for Georgia Pacific, crashed just before the AT&T tower.

Chief Deputy Mike Lambert said the 18-wheeler left the roadway and flipped several times.

“The truck was carrying the adhesive they put in paint to make it stick, which makes clean up difficult,” Lambert said. “We hope to have the cleanup process finished by the time everyone gets ready to go to work in the morning, but in the meantime, please avoid the area.”

Lambert said travelers should use alternate routes along Lowery Landing Lane, Appleton Road and Tippens Eddy Road.

Lambert said the driver suffered a head laceration and was transferred to D.W. McMillan Hospital.

The accident remains under investigation.

Traffic is now being detoured as emergency personnel are working an unknown hazardous spill on Hwy. 41 North, just before the AT&T tower.

Chief Deputy Mike Lambert said Thursday morning the accident occurred just before 9 a.m. when the 18-wheeler left the roadway and struck an embankment.

“We don’t even know what the truck was carrying, but it is a huge mess out here,” Lambert said. “We’re about to close down the road for a good length of time, so people should avoid the area.”

Lambert said travelers should use alternate routes along Lowery Landing Lane, Appleton Road and Tippens Eddy Road.

“Crews will be out here for a while to get this cleaned up,” he said.

Luckily, no one was injured during the accident.
