The City of Brewton is planning to make improvements to sewer lines around town thanks to a $500,000 grant awarded last week.
Alabama Gov. Bob Riley awarded Community Block Development Grants to 34 municipalities and county government agencies totaling $14.1 million in funds.
Riley said funds provided through the CBDG program will help supply money needed for vital services and projects across the state.
Madden said the grants won't meet all of the financial requirements to complete the sewer improvement projects in Brewton, but the funds are a good beginning.
Plans for the funds will be to upgrade existing sewage lines surrounding an area including Eula Street, Moore Street, Long Street, a small portion of Pineview Street, a small portion of Ashley Circle, Murphy Street and limited work on Bradley Street, Madden said.
The sewer improvements will mean more than improved quality of service to residents in the area where the work will be done, but to Brewton in general, Madden said.
In May, the Brewton City Council received notice of a citation issued by the Alabama Department of Environmental Management for problems in the city's sewer system.
Grant funds will help greatly to eliminate such problems, Madden said.
