With the new school year of 2015-16 here, Brewton City Schools superintendent Dr. Kenneth Varner and Escambia County Schools superintendent John Knott both are expecting great things in their schools.
In Brewton, Varner said the first day of school is always one of the most exciting times of the school year.
“Most students won’t admit it, but they like going back to school,” Varner said. “I’ve found that people in general enjoy predictable routines and the opportunity to grow. School provides those things, for both students and faculty.”
Varner added that he is confident that the administrators and staff are thoroughly prepared for a great first day of school, and as is the case every year, it may take a few days to get back into a efficient pattern.
“Buses, for example, may run a few minutes late the first few days as the various stops get worked out,” he said. “There is still construction going on at TRM that will affect parking for students and visitors. The important thing for parents to know is that we have quality people running our schools and supervising our kids, and those people are well equipped to handle any situation. They will insure that our first day is a successful one, with many more to follow as we progress through the school year.”
As for the county schools, Knott said they are really excited about this year.
“We are geared up and ready,” Knott said.
While ready, Knott said he was a little disappointed that students at W.S. Neal High School were not able to start out the year in their new school.
“We would have hoped to be in the new W.S. Neal High School, but things did not work out,” he said. “We are working at the high school to continue our classes. We have made the adjustments to carry on in full fashion. Our plans are to start the second semester in the new school. We are excited about that. We are just excited to have the innovative technology that it is going to be in the school. We will have the newest technologies when we open.”
As for the new school year, Knott said all schools have had their open houses and are ready to welcome all students this morning.
“They have made sure all the students have their schedules and the students have met their teachers,” he said. “Our busses and transportation department have worked on their routes and they have their provisions in place. We are expecting a very good year overall this year.”
