As of right now, Friday’s Battle of Murder Creek game between T.R. Miller and W.S. Neal is leading the Great American Rivalry Series vote as this week’s best rivalry game.
This summer it was announced the game had the opportunity to be featured on a live media cast – but only if the game earned enough votes.
The game is one of 11 in the competition and is currently taking 51 percent of the vote.
Other contenders include games in Ohio, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, California, Arizona, Georgia and Tennessee.
Escambia County Superintendent John Knott and Brewton City Superintendent Dr. Kenneth Varner said the attention can be great for the community.
“It’s gigantic for the community,” Knott said. “Last year was a big game. It was a fight to the finish. It was just a great all around game. I’m looking forward to the same this year.”
“Anytime you can get good publicity its great,” Dr. Varner said. “It’s a great rivalry and its great for the community. I think we want to be known for more than football but this outlet gets both schools out there and for that the school systems and the community can be very proud.’
WSN athletic director and head football coach Doug Hoehn was a part of the early process of getting the game nominated.
“Our rivalry has got a lot of attention in the nation,” Hoehn said. “I received an email around the end of last year referring to the rivalry game and it just asked ‘Do you think your rivalry deserves to be recognized?’ .I just answered back, ‘Yes.’”
“I just think that it’s neat that both schools get recognized on both sides,” he said. “I think it’s great for the community, and I think a lot of people will agree that the game is one of the great American rivalries. “
