Raye Clayton Brown, 82, of Appleton Road, Brewton, passed away Thurs. night, Nov. 19, 2015, at her residence after a brief illness.

Visitation was held Sat., Nov. 21, from 1 p.m. at Williams Memorial Chapel Funeral Home in Brewton.

Funeral services were Nov. 21, at 2 p.m. at Williams Memorial Chapel Funeral Home with the Rev. Doug Greer officiating.

Interment followed in Weaver Cemetery in Brewton with Williams Memorial Chapel Funeral Home directing.

She was a native and life long resident of Brewton. She was a member of the Divine Temple Church and New Life Church and was a retired machine operator from Sheltex.

She is survived by her son, Greg (Rhonda) Brown of Brewton; daughter, Mickie Thomason of Brewton; sister, Opal Emmons of Brewton; two grandchildren, Jeremy (Tara) Lucas and Brooke Parker; and seven great grandchildren, Sydney, Preston, Gavin, Hailey, Cameron, Ryan and Aubree.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Mickey Brown; grandson, Cody Brown; daughter-in-law, Debbie Brown; and two brothers, Kenneth Clayton and Harvey Clayton.

Huey Wilson Harwell Jr.

Flomaton

 

Huey Wilson Harwell, Jr., 73, of Flomaton, passed away on Tues., Nov. 17, 2015, at his home.

Visitation was on Fri., Nov. 20, at First Baptist Church of Flomaton from 6 until 8 p.m.

Funeral services were held on Sat., Nov. 21, at First Baptist Church of Flomaton at 11 a.m. with Dr. Jerry Keese and the Rev. Dustin Stockstill officiating.

Interment followed in Flomaton Cemetery with Flomaton Funeral Home directing.

Pallbearers were Roger Adkinson, Joe McMath, John McMath, Dewey Bondurant, Jim McCutchin and Joffrey Tullis.

He was a lifetime resident of Flomaton where he served as Deacon of Flomaton First Baptist Church for 43 years. He was a veteran of the United States Air Force.

During his working years, he worked at Container Paper Mill as a chemical room operator.

He is preceded in death by his parents, Huey W. and Audrey McDonald Harwell Sr., and brother, Jerry Harwell.

He is survived by his wife, Patricia Weaver Harwell of Flomaton; son, Michael Scott (Michelle) Harwell of Birmingham; daughter, Cristi Guthrie of Brewton; brother, Melvin Harwell of Seligman, Mo.; and five grandchildren, Taylor Guthrie, Christopher Guthrie, Noah Harwell, Michael Harwell and Cana Harwell.

In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting that donations may be made to First Baptist Church of Flomaton’s Bereavement Ministries, Awana Fund or the Van-Bus Fund.

Marvin Marion Franklin

Escambia County

 

Marvin Marion Franklin, 67, passed away Thurs., Nov. 18, 2015, in a Birmingham, hospital.

Graveside funeral services were held at 2 p.m. on Sun., Nov. 22, at Hanberry Cemetery with the Rev. Fred White officiating.

He was a native and lifelong resident of Escambia County. He owned and operated a salvage yard for a number of years, and was of the Pentecostal faith.

He is survived by a daughter, Alene (O’Neal) Varner of Brewton; brother, Lawrence Albert Franklin Jr. of Brewton; and two sisters, Mildred Louise Evans of Saraland and Earline Parsons of Georgia.

Margaret Elizabeth ‘Betty’ Garrison

Brewton

 

Margaret Elizabeth “Betty” Garrison, 96 of Brewton, passed away on Fri., Nov. 20, 2015, in Brewton.

Visitation will be held today, Wed., Nov. 25, at Craver’s Funeral Home Chapel from 10 a.m. to 10:30 am.

A graveside service will follow at 11 a.m. in Green Acres Cemetery with the Rev. Jack Fitts officiating and Craver’s Funeral Home directing.

She was born in York, Ala., and had been a resident of Brewton since 1950 coming from Livingston.

She was employed with the State of Alabama, a graduate of the University of Alabama and a member of The Escambia County Historical Society. She was a member of First Baptist Church of Brewton.

She is preceded in death by her parents, Dr. H.C. and Margaret Morris Bennett; her daughter, Margaret Garrison, and her husband, Philip Garrison.

She is survived by her son, Philip Wayne (Sharon) Garrison of Laguna Beach, Calif.; granddaughter, Shelley (Chris) Holzworth; and great-grandchildren, Chris Holzworth and Grayson Holzworth.

Russell Pierce Harper

Greenville

 

Russell Pierce Harper, 42, a resident of Greenville, passed away Mon., Nov. 16, 2015.

A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. on Thurs., Nov. 19, at Sunrise Memorial Park with Brother Jackie Davis and the Rev. Lane Simmons officiating and Dunklin and Daniels Funeral Home directing.

He was preceded in death by his father, Deleno Max Harper Sr.; paternal grandparents, Y.O. Harper and Gertrude Stokes; and maternal grandparents: Curtis and Ida Crawford Pierce.

He is survived by his sons, “Dalton” Pierce Harper and Russell “Pierce” Harper II of Pike Road, Ala.; his mother, Sandra Pierce Harper of Greenville; a brother, Delano Max Harper Jr. of Richmond, Va.; a sister, Traci Brenier (John) of Gautier, Miss.; nieces: Alexandra Marie Harper of Greenville and Resa Borries of Gautier; nephews, Christian Harper of Coral Springs, Fla., and Spence Brenier (Melanie) of Gautier; and many loving aunts, uncles, and cousins.

He attended Fort Dale Academy and was the Most Valuable Player in 1991 for football. He served in the US Army from 1992-1994 and worked in the forestry industry prior to a logging accident in 2002.

Esther Mae Hardy

Brewton

 

Esther Mae Hardy was born in Brewton on March 15, 1029, to the union of Andrew and Ella Hardy.  She left this world on Nov. 14, 2015.

Funeral services were held on Fri., Nov. 20, at 2 p.m., at Baptist Hill Missionary Baptist Church in Brewton with the Rev. Eric T. Andrews officiating. Interment followed in Baptist Hill Cemetery with Presley-Fluker Funeral Directors directing.

She was the fifth of six children – three boys and three girls. She was educated at Booker T. Washington High School and graduated from Southern Normal High School. She furthered education at Alabama State College on a basketball scholarship.

She accepted Christ at an early age and joined Baptist Hill Missionary Baptist Church. AS a member, she was an active matron, on the usher board and drove the church van for the youth. She was a faithful member until her health failed, preventing her from attending church regularly.

She was employed as a supervisor at Brewton Fashions (Judy Bond) until her retirement.

She coached and played girls softball. She played second base for the Men’s All Star Baseball team and was the only female on the roster. She enjoyed people – young and old alike. Every summer, she took the girls and boys in the community to the grape farm in Damascus for summer fun. Her yard was the playground for the community kids. There, they would play baseball and basketball.

She was active in the Alabama Democratic Conference and the NAACP. She was one of the original organizers of the Baptist Hill Cemetery Committee and a member of the Brewton Community Choir. AS a resident of the nursing home, she was president of the Resident Council at West Gate Village Nursing Facility.

She was preceded in death by her parents and two brothers and two sisters, Dan Nichols, James A. Hardy, Mary Cheatham and Myrtise Hardy.

She leaves to cherish her memory a devoted brother, Robert S. (Bertha) Hardy; sister-in-aw, Oretha Hardy; nieces, Shirley (Bert) Barton, Maxine Arrington, Jackie (Rufus) Thames, Carmen (Tiny) Lovelace, Tracie Hardy and Gussie Harris; nephews, Rufus Hardy, Harold (Alice) Hardy, Rodney Hardy and Tony (Juana) Hardy; special friend, Iris and Randy Jordan, Tracy Green Yvonne Lester, Lynette Avant, Tammera Smith, Derrick Robinson and Wanda Riley; and a host of great nieces, nephews, cousins and other friends.

 

Marvin Darrell Campbell

Jay, Fla.

 

Marvin Darrell Campbell, 62, of Iva Road in Jay, passed away Fri., Nov. 20, 2015, in a Pensacola, Fla., hospice after a extended illness.

Memorial services were held on Tues., Nov. 24, at 3 p.m. at Williams Memorial Chapel Funeral Home with the Rev. Mitch Herring officiating and Williams Memorial Chapel Funeral Home directing.

He was a native of Century, Fla., and a long time resident of Jay. He was of the Baptist faith and was a plumber. He was an artist and played the guitar, loved to bass fish and was a huge Beatles fan.

He is survived by his wife, Teresa Nolen Campbell of Jay; his children, Patrick Carroll, Pamela Campbell, Jessica Campbell and Darrell, Jr. (Courtney) Campbell; his brother’s daughter who was like a daughter, Teka Campbell; sister, Gloria (Joe) Manna; grandchildren, Trystin Dyal, Hayleigh Dyal, Aliza Rutherford, Jordan Mallally, Audrey Vickors, Alyssa Vickors, Ethan Campbell, Deva Carroll, Jason Carroll, Thomas Carroll, Amber Carroll, David Carroll; and In-laws, Hilda (John), Buddy (LeNora) and DeLaine (Marty).

He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Terry Campbell; sister, Sharon Campbell; and daughter, Kristina Dyal Freeman.
