Gordy praised for BCA representation
On Monday, October 22, 2007, I and six hundred other people attended the Business Council of Alabama's annual chairman's banquet in Birmingham.
This year's outgoing chairman was Carol Gordy of Brewton. For those of you who do not know, the Business Council of Alabama (BCA) is made up of businesses (large and small) all over Alabama who have joined together to promote issues favorable to business. Since business is the backbone of our economy, the organization is important to all of us. This is a very impressive and effective organization and we are fortunate to have had someone from Brewton leading it for the past year.
Brewton has always enjoyed an excellent reputation statewide and Carol's chairmanship only added luster to that image.
Congratulations Carol and thank you for representing us so well.

I just wanted to take this opportunity to thank all who were responsible for the Kids and Senior Citizens Fishing Day held recently.
The organizations listed below are the reason for the success of this event. Without their support the event could not happen.
First, to Jefferson Davis Community College: if they did not allow us to use their lake and facilities, we would not have a place to have this event. The lake is just the right size.
The Alabama Game and Fish Department provide us each year with 40 to 50 rods and reels to use for this event at no charge as well as having someone there to help.
Buck Farrior and Bo Owens with the Escambia County Cooperative Extension System put in a lot of travel and paperwork getting the word out to all of the local schools. They were also on hand to help at the event.
Other helpers that were at the event were Danny and Karen Parker, my wife Sharon, and our daughter and her husband, Stacey and Jerry Aaron. We all help with the Fishers of Men tournaments.
Sammy Thomas and Lance Youngblood, who fish with the Fishers of men, were there to help also.
Alco Baptist Church sent some people to help at the event. Psi Beta National Honor Society sponsor Beulah Patton and several of her members were on hand to offer help also.
The Brewton Standard, The Tri-City Ledger, WKNU, WEBJ, WELJ all did their part to get the word out about the event.
The following businesses played a big part in this event by either making a donation or being responsible for giving something to make this event happen: Gulf Coast RC&D, Weyerhaeuser of Castleberry, Bank of Brewton, BankTrust, WalMart, First Progressive Bank, Brewton Kiwanis Club, Coca-Cola Bottling Company of Pensacola, Fla., Pic N Sav and Fuqua Catfish Farm.
Thank you to all of the above. Many hours and dollars went into this event to make it the success it was. We had 248 children to come and fish. There were 1850 pounds of catfish purchased and some fish donated on top of that. There were 12 new rods and reels given away. There were over 160 honey buns given away as well as around 150 hot dogs, chips and drinks given away. All of this was made possible by the ones listed above.
