For the second time in three days, Atmore’s Holman Prison is in turmoil as the facility remains on lockdown just after lunch Monday.
Things began Friday night when an altercation between two inmates escalated into a riot in the general population area.
Sources say an unidentified corrections officer was stabbed nine times in the abdomen area when he attempted to break up the fight, while Warden Carter Davenport was stabbed three times. Davenport was treated on scene while the officer was transported to an off-site medical facility.
After the assault, approximately 100 inmates then gained access to a hallway outside of the dorm and started a fire. Three state department of corrections emergency response teams entered the dorm and detained the inmates. By 5:30 a.m. Sunday, prison staff and Escambia County Sheriff’s Office personnel had forcibly taken control of the prison back.
Videos of the riot were posted on social media and other media outlet sources, and as the situation continued to evolve, so did the leaking of information by inmates. The images showed fires at the prison, and inmates with their faces covered as they reported the “gates are rolled up” and beds had been overturned.
Monday morning, DOC spokesman Bob Horton confirmed another response team headed back to the prison after another inmate was stabbed with a makeshift weapon just after 8:30 a.m. in a dormitory. The injuries were not life-threatening; however, when officers attempted to apprehend the suspect, they were met with resistance.
“Prisoners became aggressive and barricaded themselves inside the dorm,” Horton said.
Officers have secured all sections of the prison to prevent the approximately 70 inmates inside the dorm from entering other parts of the facility.
As of now, the facility remains on lockdown.
