Tigers have strong outing 

Rainy weather didn’t keep the T.R. Miller varsity track and field teams off the playing field Saturday.

If anything, it went a long way to prepare the athletes for performing in inclement weather, Coach Eddie Brundidge said. The teams traveled to Mobile’s McGill-Toolen Catholic School to compete against seven other schools.

“We had a great showing here – even in this weather,” Brundidge said of the day’s dreary conditions. “Even though these schools aren’t in our division, it was great training.

“As we continue to through the season, we don’t know what the weather will be like by the time we make it to sectionals,” he said. “Now they know how it feels to perform in less than ideal conditions.”

Makayla Harrison had an outstanding showing, Brundidge said. Harrison earned a first place in the high jump; second place finish in the 100-meter hurdles, and second place in the triple jump.

In the girls’ competition, Brundidge also commended Serena Smith as she tied for a first place discus finish with distance of 94-07.5 and Peyton Baxter’s third place pole vaulting finish. Smith also earned an eighth place in the shot put division.

Other top 10 finishes included:

• Kelsi Lum, ninth, 300-meter hurdles;

• Carmen Knowles, seventh, 3,200-meter run;

• Tarah Townsend, eighth, 3,200-meter run;

• Aleria Smith, fourth, javelin;

• Raven Bryant, eighth, long jump, and ninth, triple jump; and,

• Sarah Byrd, eighth, triple jump.

A number of TRM male athletes finished the day with strong results, including:

• Ahmad Taylor, fourth, 110-meter hurdles, and third, triple jump.

• Michael Smith, ninth, 300-meter hurdles;

• Travis Carlson, eighth, 1,600-meter run

• Micah Flores, ninth, 3,200-meter run;

• Landon Salter, ninth, discuss;

• Michael Campbell, 10th, javelin;

• Henry Davison, ninth, long jump; and,

• Michael Smith, sixth, shot put.
