Brewton may soon have another Mexican restaurant on the roster.

MI CASA, which aims to open in the old Acapulco location and owned by Santiago Torres, has applied for a retail liquor license.

Monday, the Brewton City Council set an April 30 public hearing to allow for input before granting the request. City Clerk Steve Yuhasz said the state beverage control board has approved the establishment’s license request.

Yuhasz said Acapulco held an identical licenses before closing in February.

In other business, the council:

• recognized J.P. “Sonny” Maxwell, the late former city clerk who died earlier this month for his 33 years of service to the city;

• approved a new permitted use table for planning and zoning purposes;

• agreed to participate in the annual back-to-school sales tax holiday, which will be held on Aug. 5-7;

• voted to enter into a new five-year dozier lease with Caterpillar;

• set a committee of councilmen Frank Cotten and Pat Poole to bring a nominee for the city school board seat currently held by Dr. Keith Miller, which expires April 30;

• heard an update on the city’s current paving projects; and,

• granted use of the city streets for the D.W. McMillan annual Relay for Life 5K, which will be held on April 23 beginning at 8 a.m.
