Despite the recent rain in the Brewton area, Brewton fire chief Jeff Salter wants to remind residents the statewide burn ban is still in effect.

“Brewton received about an sixteenth inch of rain earlier in the week,” Salter said. “That still isn’t enough. The area is still extremely dry where a fire can take place.

“The area will need about five to seven more inches of rain for any changes to the ban to be put in order. It’s important for people to know it’s still dangerous to burn.”

Residents are usually giving a warning for first time offense. Repeated offense can lead to a $500 fine.
