Family, friends and supporters gathered on a sunny and memorable day on Dec. 21, 2016, as the City of Brewton recognized the Rev. Dr. H.K. Matthews for his unwavering dedication serving the community and support of civil rights.
The ceremony commemorated with the unveiling of H.K. Matthews Drive located from Belleville Avenue to Ala. Hwy 41.
Dr. Matthews was presented a proclamation in the renaming of the street by Mayor Yank Lovelace, as well as a key to the city and honorary pin by city councilmen Fred Barton and Feast Broughton.
Among Dr. Matthews many accomplishments was his participation in the Selma to Montgomery marches led by Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and his protesting of injustice and inequality in Northwest Florida.
