Lewis E. Samuel

Evergreen

On the morning of Jan. 24, 2017, God sent his angel to pluck from His garden another lovely flower, and escorted him to his eternal home.

Funeral services were held Wed., Feb. 1 at 11 a.m. at Presley-Fluker Funeral Chapel in Brewton with the Pastor Martha Boman officiating and Presley–Fluker Funeral Directors directing.

He was the 13th child born out of 22 siblings to the late Minnie and Jimmie Samuel.

He is preceded in death by one brother, Johnny Samuel, and four sisters, Lola Dees, Minnie Pearl Samuel, Ruby Roach and Jessie Daniels.

He enjoyed life and made every one smile. He was a native of Evergreen and a longtime resident of Pensacola, Fla. He attended school in Evergreen and worked with Design System Furniture in Pensacola until his health failed him. His family and everyone who knew and loved him will miss him.

He leaves to cherish his memories 10 sisters; Madeline (John) Paul, Carrie (Kenny) Redman, Sherry Ewing, Theresia Ewing, Ruthie Monroe and Kattie Samuel, all of Brewton; Bessie Gustavo of O’Fallon, Ill.; Vilena Baptise and Kathie Miller, both of Pensacola; Jennette Hall of Mobile; five brothers, Raford Samuel of Springfields, Mass.,Willie Samuel, Leesville, La.; Halvesta Samuel of Atmore; Cornelius Samuel ; and Mackala (Jennifer) Samuel of Brewton; a host of nieces and nephews; a faithful nephew, Michael Dees; and other cousins, relatives and friends.

OLester Anderson

Brewton

OLester Anderson was welcomed home to be with the Lord on Thurs., Jan. 26, 2017, from a long battle with heart failure. He was born on October 26, 1948 in Conecuh County to the late Sammie Lee and Mattie Anderson.

Funeral services were held Fri., Feb. 3, at 11 a.m. a Second Saint Siloam Missionary Baptist Church in Brewton with the Rev. Pastor Ellis J. Davis. Interment followed at Oak Grove Cemetery in Brewton with Presley–Fluker Funeral Directors directing.

He was preceded in death by his son, Lester O’Neil Anderson; ex-wife, Brenda Faye Anderson; brothers, Robert Lee Anderson Sr., Joe Lee Anderson and Wlter C. Anderson; and sisters, Quintella Patrick, Dorothy Davis and Eloise Woods.

He was a long time employee, for more than 40 years, of Jernigan Nordmeyer Tire Company in Brewton. He was a loved and devoted employee and the best tire changer in Brewton.

The memories of his life will forever remain in the hearts of his two daughters, Teresa (Minister Kenneth) Lee of Pensacola, Fla., and Pebbles (Timothy) Tolvin of Birmingham; grandchildren, Tymothy Anderson of Pensacola, Fla., Devon Anderson of Montgomery, Ashley Frye of Pensacola, Fla., and Theo Tolvin and Trent Tolvin, both of Birmingham; two brothers, Willie Anderson of Summerdale, and Eugene Anderson of Brewton; three sisters, Margaret Brown and Minnie Prime, both of Brewton, and Novella Richardson of Repton; special nephew, Pastor Ellis Davis Jr.; and a host of other loving nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.

Carolyn Mitchell Lane

Roanoke

Carolyn Mitchell Lane, 95, passed away on Jan. 31,2017, in Birmingham.

She was born in Roanoke, on Sept. 15,1921, to William Doss  and Lula Morris Mitchell.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her twin brother, William Doss Mitchell, Jr. her husband, James Snuggs Lane, and her grandson, Wiley Dennis Wood III.

She was a graduate of Handley High School and attended the University of Alabama.

As a long time member of the First Baptist Church of Roanoke, she served as organist of the Mens Bible Class  and also served over 45 years as organist at the First United Methodist Church of Roanoke and pianist for the Young Mens Sunday School Class. She was the administrative officer of the Selective Service System in Randolph County during World War II and the Korean War. She was a founding member of the Randolph County Hospital Auxiliary, the Silhouette Club and the Roanoke Schools Association.

She is survived by two daughters, Carol Lane Wood of Birmingham, and Lucy Lane Hines (Jack) of Brewton; three grandchildren, Lane Hines Woodke (Brian), Jack Hines (Amanda) and Thomas Hines (Stacy); and six great-grandchildren.

During the last years of her life, she lived at St. Martins in the Pines. Her family expresses their appreciation of the attention, care and compassion of the staff. “Our gratitude to you is immeasurable”.

Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. with visitation at 10 a.m. at Roanoke First United Methodist Church on Thurs., Feb. 2, with the Rev. Chris Martin officiating. Interment was at Cedarwood Cemetery.

Matthew Aaron Madden

Brewton

Matthew Aaron Madden, 27, of Lowery Landing Road in Brewton, passed away Wed., Feb. 1, 2017, at his residence after a brief illness.

Funeral services were Sun., Feb. 5, at 2 p.m. at Williams Memorial Chapel Funeral Home with the Rev. Malcolm Madden officiating. Interment followed in Glory Hill Cemetery in Brewton with Williams Memorial Chapel Funeral Home directing.

He was a native and life long resident of Brewton. He was of the Holiness faith and a 2008 honors graduate of W.S. Neal High School. He enjoyed woodworking.

He is survived by parents, Todd and Tina Downing Madden of Brewton; one brother, Ryan Madden of Brewton; three sisters, Lacey Madden, Makayla Alan and Amy Madden (Frankie) Cardwell, all of Brewton; niece, Madison; nephew, Colton; and a number of aunts, uncles and cousins.

William Clyde Madden

Brewton

William Clyde Madden, 85, of Appleton Road in Brewton passed away Tues., Jan. 31, 2017, at a local hospital after a brief illness.

Funeral services were held Sat., Feb. 4, at 11 a.m. at Williams Memorial Chapel Funeral Home with the Rev. Frankie Bell and the Rev. A.D. Hale officiating. Interment followed in Martin Family Cemetery in Brewton, with Williams Memorial Chapel Funeral Home directing.

He was a native and life long resident of Brewton. He was a member of the Bethel Holiness Church. He attended the Escambia County school system, and was retired from Monsanto. He enjoyed fishing, camping, gardening and lawn care.

He is survived by his son, Michael Worm (Brenda Gail) Madden of Brewton; two daughters, Gail Gibson and Sandra Madden, both of Brewton; two brothers, Clyde Madden, Jr., and Willie Charles Madden, both of Brewton; six sisters, Emily Cooper of Brewton, Agnes Crutchfield of Evergreen, Eva Jean Evans of East Brewton, Marie Hale of Brewton, Bonnie Walker of Dothan, and Linda Faye White of Tuscaloosa; two half brothers, Wayne Madden and Shelton Rusty Madden; two step-sisters, Glennis Gomillon of Pensacola, Fla., and Nadine Kearley of Mobile; five grandchildren, Patty, Pam, Kim, Lee Ann and Hannah; and eight great grandchildren, Marissa, Madison, Anna Grace, Adam, Tori, Ashli, Cody and Hayden.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Doris Martin Madden; parents, Clyde and Ruthie Bell Morris Madden; two brothers, James Cecil Madden and Holly Madden; stepbrother, J.L. Chance; granddaughter, Morgan White; and son-in-law, Oland Gibson.

Opal Steele Smith

Brewton

Opal Steele Smith, 89, of Appleton Road in Brewton, passed away Sun., Feb. 5, 2017, in a local nursing facility after a brief illness.

Funeral services were held Tues., Feb. 7, at 1 p.m. at the North Brewton Baptist Church with the Rev. Michael King officiating.

Interment followed in Green Acres Cemetery in Brewton with Williams Memorial Chapel Funeral Home directing.

She was a native of Atmore, and a life long resident of Brewton. She was a member of the North Brewton Baptist Church and was retired from Judy Bond with 25 years of service. She loved her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren.

She is survived by two daughters, Carolyn Doster and Linda Miller, both of Brewton; two grandchildren, Kimberly Doster of West Monroe, La., and Kevin Doster of Farmerville, La.; five great grandchildren, Daniel, Devin, Brittan, Jakob and Eric Floyd; and two brothers, Robert Steele of Keego, and Jimmy Steele of Brewton.

She is preceded in death by parents, Clark and Dezzie Grissett Steele; husband, Floyd Alma Smith; two sisters, Jean Thompson and Annie Ruth Steele; and two brothers, Clifford Steele and JP Steele.
