A Brewton family is recovering after a devastating house fire Sunday.

Brett and Jeni Chancery’s Old Castleberry Road home was discovered in flames just after 8 p.m.

Fire department units from every surrounding department responded to the fire; however, it wasn’t enough to save the home.

“We are very blessed,” said Chancery, the pastor at Atmore’s Judson Baptist Church and history teacher at Flomaton High School.  “We came straight after church Sunday to find the house filled with smoke. If it had been three hours later, it could have been much, much worse.”

The family, which includes three girls age 6, 4 and seven months, will be able to salvage a number of items from the home, they said. Luckily, no one was injured and the family does have homeowners insurance.

This is the second house fire for Chancery. He said his family, which has lived on the same stretch of property for years, suffered a house fire when he was in the fourth grade.

“Still, I say we’re blessed,” he said. “We are all safe, and we will be OK.”

Donations for the family can be given to the Escambia County Baptist Association.
