Auburn Edward Brooks Jr.

Auburn Edward “Bubba” Brooks Jr., 63, passed away on Thurs., June 15, 2017, in the Brewton hospital.

Graveside funeral services will be held on today, June 21, at Mt. Pisgah Cemetery at 3  p.m. with the Rev. King McCarver officiating.

He was born in Etowah, County and had been a resident of Castleberry since 2011.  During his working years, he was a printer for The Gadsden Times newspaper. 

He was of the Church of Christ faith. He was preceded in death by his parents, Auburn Edward Brooks, Sr. and Elaine Cameron Brooks.

He is survived by two sons, Robert (Mandy) Brooks and Zack Brooks; one daughter, Jennifer Brooks, all of Gadsden; four sisters, Anita Sundy of Castleberry, Lois Spraggins of Gadsden, Rebecka Sue Brooks of Albertville, and Audrey McCarver of Mississippi; three grandchildren, Gina Brooks, Zander Brooks, and Ever Brooks; and close friends, the employees of The Gadsden Times.

Syble Virginia Still Peebles

Damascus Community

Syble Virginia Still Peebles, 91, of Hwy. 29 of the Damascus Community in Brewton, passed away Sat., June 17, in a Montgomery nursing facility after a brief illness.

She was a native and life long resident of Brewton. She was of the Baptist faith, a graduate of Damascus High School, and was retired from D.W. McMillan Memorial Hospital with more than 20 years of service.

She is survived by her son, Sammy (Kate) Peebles of Denver, Colo.; daughter, Bobbie (Larry) Carter of Montgomery; and four grandsons, Robb Carter, Troy Carter, Mark Carter, and Chase Byrd Peebles.

She was preceded in death by parents, Sanford and Leila White Still; and two brothers, Warren Still, and Theron Still.

Visitation will be held today, Wed. June 21, from 12:30 p.m. until 1:30 p.m. at Williams Memorial Chapel Funeral Home in Brewton

Funeral services will follow at 1:30 p.m. at Williams Memorial Chapel Funeral Home with the Rev. Doug Greer officiating. Interment will follow in Still Cemetery Damascus Community in Brewton with Williams Memorial Chapel Funeral Home directing.

Doreen Nall

Brewton

Doreen Nall of Brewton, passed away peacefully in her sleep on Sat., June 10, 2017.

Funeral services were held on Fri., June 16, at 11 a.m. from the chapel of Craver’s Funeral Home with the Rev. John Finklea officiating. Interment followed in Ramah Cemetery.

She was born in Manitoba, Canada, on April 8, 1922. Her family moved to Chicago when she was a young girl where she lived until she married Leroy Thomas Nall in 1941. They spent most of their lives in California until Tee’s retirement from iron working in 1973. 

They moved to Alabama where Tee was originally from a bought a large farm.  They later moved to Brewton where they both resided until recently when she moved to Florida to be closer to her granddaughter.

She was a devoted wife and mother, grandmother and friend. She was a lively soul and well liked. Every year she mailed over 100 Christmas cards to the many friends and acquaintances she made over the years. She was an active member of the First Baptist Church of Brewton and enjoyed fellowship there. 

She was preceded in death by her husband, Leroy Thomas Nall; brother, Alfred Dilk; daughter, Sharon Mae Nall Wagner; and grandson, Jonathan Reed Wagner. 

She will be dearly missed but was ready to go to heaven and be with her beloved husband of 65 years.

She is survived by two grandchildren, Jason (Onchan) Wagner and Suzanne (Michael) Gibson; four great-grandchildren, Lance Gibson, Lauren Gibson, Johnny Gibson, and Jennah Gibson; and a son-in-law, John Wagner.

Francis Ouida Crawford

Francis Ouida Crawford, 80, passed away on Wed., June 14, 2017, in a Century, Fla., health care facility.

Funeral services were held Sat., June 17, at 11 a.m. from the chapel of Craver’s Funeral Home with the Rev. Johnny Cardwell officiating. Interment followed in Green Acres Memorial Gardens.

She was born in McKenzie and had been a resident of the Brewton area for most of her life. She was a homemaker and was of the holiness faith.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Hunter “Pete” Crawford; four brothers; and three grandchildren.

She is survived by two sons, Charles (Linda) Crawford of Brewton and Stevie Crawford of East Brewton; one daughter, Debra (Wayne) Stewart of Evergreen; two brothers, Jerry Davis of Flomaton, and Roland Davis of Nevada; one sister, Elaine (Jimmy) Mullins of East Brewton, AL; seven grandchildren, and nine great-grandchildren.

James Franklin Adams

James Franklin “Wildman” Adams, 77, passed away on Sun., June 11, 2017, at a Brewton nursing facility.

A private service will be held at a later date.

He was born in Century, Fla., and had been a life-long resident of Flomaton. He worked as a truck drive for USA Concrete for a number of years, and was of the Mormon faith.

He is survived by one brother, A.H. Adams of Brewton; one sister, Wanda Faye Drake of Mobile; numerous nieces and nephews; and extended family member, Stephanie Boyd.

Chandler Sue Garrett

Chandler Sue Garrett, 62, passed away Fri., June 16, 2017, at her Brewton residence.

Funeral services were held Mon., June 19, at 2 p.m. from the chapel of Craver’s Funeral Home with the Rev. John Finklea officiating. Interment followed in Green Acres Memorial Gardens.

She was a native and life-long resident of Brewton. She was a homemaker and was a member of Brewton’s First Baptist Church. 

She was preceded in death by her father, Durl Thompson.

She is survived by her husband, Tommy Garrett of Brewton; mother, Lucille Nelson of Century; one son, Weston (Kelsey) Garrett of Pace, Fla.; two brothers, Charles Thompson of Pensacola, Fla., Danny Thompson of Washington state; three sisters, Maxine (Ronnie) Smith, Deborah (Russell) Padgett, both of Brewton, and Cindy Thompson Keith of South Korea; and one granddaughter, Tiffany.

Carolyn McClelland

Carolyn McClelland, 60, passed away on Tuesday, June 13, 2017 in the Evergreen hospital.

Graveside funeral services were held on Mon., June 19, at 2 p.m. in Howard Cemetery in the Bexley Community of Lucedale, Miss.

She was born in Lucedale, Miss., and had been a life long resident the Brewton/East Brewton area.

She is survived by three sons, Ruben Fairly, Dan Fairly, and Cecil Fairly; two daughters, Mattie McClelland and Amanda Fairly; two brothers, William Howard and James Howard; one sister, Helen Coleman; and two grandchildren, Armoni Spencer and Anbryanna Spencer.

Mary Ann Strawbridge Baker

Brewton

Mary Ann Strawbridge Baker, 87, of Alco Drive passed away Wed., June 14, 2017 in a Pensacola, Fla., hospital after a brief illness.

Funeral services were held Sat., June 17, at 3 p.m. at the Brewton First Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Parker Johnson officiating. Interment followed in Green Acres Cemetery in Brewton with Williams Memorial Chapel Funeral Home directing.

She was a native and long time resident of Brewton. She was a member of the Brewton First Presbyterian Church, a 1948 graduate of W.S. Neal High School, and a graduate of the University of Alabama, She earned her master’s degree from Auburn University. She was a retired reading supervisor from the Escambia County Florida Board of Education with more than 30 years of service and had enjoyed her retirement for 32 years. In her younger years, she enjoyed traveling and gardening and she was an avid Auburn fan.

She is survived by three sons, Dr. Baxter (Ivey) Baker, Rep. Alan (Kaki) Baker, both of Brewton, and Mickey (Elaine) Baker of Dublin, Ga.; daughter, Nelda Baker Sanders of Pace, Fla.; four grandchildren; and three great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by parents, Lee Hayward and Nellie Hendricks Strawbridge; and husband, Ollie Baker.

Robert D. Maxwell

Brewton

Robert D. Maxwell, 90, passed away Mon., June 19, 2017 in the Brewton hospital.

Visitation will be held at Craver’s Funeral Home on Thurs., June 22 from 1 p.m. until service time at 2 p.m. The Rev. John Finklea will be officiating.

Pallbearers will be Bobby Maxwell, Dylan Maxwell, Corey Maxwell, Krishna Gupta, Danny Joyner and Gary Robinson.

Honorary pallbearers will be Kevin Maxwell, Brennan Maxwell, and Meredith Hall.

He was born in Atlanta, Ga., and had been a resident of Brewton since 1957.  He was a veteran of World War II, having served with the U.S. Navy; and was also a veteran of the Korean Conflict, having served with the U.S. Marines.

He was a loader checker at Jefferson Smurfit for a number of years. He was an active member of First Baptist Church, serving as a deacon, and working with the RAs and youth. He was an avid golfer and had a great interest in finance.

He is survived by his wife of more than 69 years, Bonnie Ruth; two sons, Robert “Spike” (Marcia) Maxwell, and Darrell “Rocky” Maxwell, all of Brewton; two sisters, Patricia Burns of Marietta, Ga., and Evelyn Etheridge

of Smyrna, Ga.; five grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.

Kathrina Rizbit Daw

Castleberry

Kathrina “Kitty” Rizbit Daw, 81, of Castleberry passed away June 19, 2017 at her County Rd. 23 home surrounded by her loved ones.

Funeral services will be held today, June 21 at 11 a.m., at Hamden Ridge Church. The Rev. John Whitfield will be officiating. Interment will follow in the Hamden Ridge Church Cemetery. Cope-Keahey Funeral Home is entrusted with funeral arrangements.

She owned and operated Castleberry Flea Market for more than 30 years.

She is survived by her husband of 61 years, Bobby Daw; son, Robert Daw, both of Castleyberry; daughters, Barbara Gray of Castleberry and

Maria (William) Holley of Evergreen; son-in-law, Danny White of Castleberry;

seven grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by one daughter, Debbie Daw White.
