This year, the Brewton Rodeo is providing its attendees with a portion of the event that is has not presented before. Victoria Ann will be riding her horse, Mustang Fire, as they show off their talents in “trick riding.”

Known as the “Alabama Cowgirl”, the 21-year-old Ann comes from Theodore and has been riding horses for 17 years.

Mustang Fire was a wild horse before Ann adopted her in September 2013 from the Bureau of Land Management mustang, from a herd called the Little Owyhee.

Ann came across the horse at an adoption event, much like one she will be performing at in early-November in Pensacola.

“These events help to connect people with wild horses, like she was,” Ann said.

She has now had Mustang Fire for four years, but the tandem has only been practicing trick riding for a year and a half. Ann said they spend about 10 hours a week practicing and exercising.

“We started trying it out because not many people do it, and I like to stand out,” Ann said. “This allows us to do that.”

She has performed in over 25 rodeos across the South this year, alone.

She said getting the stunts down comes from a lot of practice and trust building with Mustang Fire, especially to be able to perform with confidence in front of a crowd of people.

“We have to have a connection,” Ann said. “She has to trust me and I have to trust her to keep me safe while I am hanging upside down and she is moving at full speed.”

The Brewton Rodeo takes place Fri., Oct. 13 and Sat., Oct. 14 at O’Bannon Park, off of Hwy. 41.

Gates open at 6 p.m. both nights. It is a $10 entry fee for adults and $5 for children 12 and under.

Ann will be available for photos and autographs after both performances.
