Paws Crossed Dog Rescue visited Brewton Elementary School last week to promote what animal rescues do in the Brewton area and how students can help.
The Paws Crossed workers told the children that volunteering and donating money, blankets and dog food are important for the community.
They urged the students to make a difference by caring for their own dogs.
“Spaying or neutering their pets helps control the puppy population,” Edith Kelley, director of the rescue, said. “Treating them like family is also important.”
BES held a donation contest with the third-grade classes to see which class could bring in the most change to donate. A total of 88 pounds of change were donated, according to Kelley.
Kelley said community service hours are available for high school students who wish to volunteer at the rescue.
Monetary donations can be made at Brewton Animal Hospital under the name Paws Crossed Dog Rescue. Donated items can be dropped off at 110 Wilson St. in Brewton.
