The Jefferson Davis Community College Warhawks baseball team had to wait an extra day to start their 2008 season due to a rain out Friday.
On Saturday they may have wanted to wait a couple more days to get everything going, but that was in innings one through five.
In those innings, the Warhawks fell behind 7-0 to Lawson State before outscoring Lawson 8-0 in innings six through eight as they used a dramatic comeback to get their first win of the season 8-7.
It was not until the fourth inning of the game that the Warhawks were able to get their first hit of the new season.
While Lawson's pitcher had the JDCC batters without a hit until the fourth inning, JDCC starting pitcher Derek Lowery struggled.
Lowery went 4 innings, giving up six hits, with seven runs scored and six being earned. Lowery had four walks and one strike out.
Derrick Young and Hunter Brown came in relief of Lowery as they combined for five innings, three hits, and no runs while striking out four. Brown picked up the win for the Warhawks.
After Lawson's momentum was stopped, the JDCC bats came alive as in the sixth inning as Lindsey and Cody White singled back-to-back.
Both Warhawks later scored in the inning to cut the lead to 7-2.
In the seventh inning, four consecutive singles were made by Snedeker, Turner, Justin Reeves, and Lindsey. Lindsey's single scored Snedeker as the Warhawks cut the lead to 7-3.
A bases loaded walk cut the lead to 7-4 as Bryant Hall grounded into a fielder's choice to score Reeves and make the lead 7-5.
In the eighth inning, two walks put runners on base for the Warhawks and Lindsey doubled to score Snedeker and Turner to tie the game at 7-7. With two outs in the eighth inning, Hall tripled to score Lindsey to give the Warhawks an 8-7 lead as Brown shut Lawson down in the ninth as JDCC took the game 8-7.
Lindsey and Hall led the team with 3 RBIs each as White and Snedeker added one each.
The Warhawks were scheduled to make up Friday's rainout on Monday and hosted Gulf Coast Community College on Tuesday.
The Warhawks hit the road for a three-game road trip before returning to Brewton on Sunday, Feb. 17 for a 9-inning game against Calhoun Community College.
JDCC 3, Bevill 11
After a great performance from their bullpen in Saturday's opening game, the Warhawks bullpen struggled on Monday as the Warhawks fell 11-3 and fell to 1-1 on the season.
Offensively JDCC spread 7 hits, all singles throughout the lineup.
