The battle of Burn Corn Creek reenactment is this weekend at Brewton’s Jennings Park. The event will be July 28, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.
It will be a day of fun, historical demonstrations, living displays, good food and great fellowship as you will witness the display of one of the many events which led to the eventual settlement of south Alabama by white settlers.
“This is my first time being involved and I am looking for a great time and turnout,” Steve Layton said. The battle of Burnt Corn Creek took place on July 27, 1813 in what is now a part of Escambia County, Ala. The battle was the result of growing concern on the part of the Creek Indians about the increasing number of white settlers that were passing through the area headed for the Mississippi Territory.
“This event has been taking places for five years in Brewton, and last year we were unsuccessful due to the weather,” Layton said.
“Larry Murphy from Camp 31 will be there cooking food, along with the Choo Choo market vendors and others,” he said. There will be food vendors on site, and restrooms available.
There will be spaces for the vendors and those wishing to display historical artifacts. Also, there limited electrical service will be provided on a come, first served basis.
“Jennings Park is a great place for this reenactment to take place due to the space and openness,” Layton said. Santa Rosa Creek will also be here and they will bring an educational group with them where they will provide us with their historical center and exhibits.
Parking will be available throughout the downtown area, and shuttle services will be offered. Special parking will be provided for handicapped individuals with a handicapped tag, placard or decal.
