Bigger and better signage warning motorists of the approaching stop sign at the intersection of Appleton Road and Lowery Landing road after two mishaps happened in the last few weeks.
Last week, The Brewton Standard reported about an Xterra running through the home of Susie and Chad Cooper as they slept in their home a few weeks ago.
No one was injured in the incident, but the home’s living room sustained major damage.
On Wednesday evening, a driver ran into the Coopers’ yard, but luckily their home was not struck.
“Some girl ran into their yard. She didn’t hit the house,” Ann Locklin, who lives next door to the Coopers, said.
Cooper told The Brewton Standard she was going to talk to the Escambia County Commission about the intersection. Cooper said that she and her husband weren’t the only ones who had experienced mishaps at the intersection.
County Road Engineer Bill Bridges said that he spoke to Mrs. Cooper this week and went out to the area and assessed the road situation.
“I talked to her,” he said. “I went out and assessed it. All the signs are up. If someone is driving the speed limit, it shouldn’t happen, but to try to help, our standard stop ahead signs and stop signs will be changed to the larger size stop sign and stop ahead signs.”
Bridges said that everything is up to state and federal protocol.
“I expect the signs to be up by the end of the week,” he said. “Most likely Wednesday.”
Bridges said that they will monitor the situation and will take additional steps if needed.
County Commissioner David Stokes, who district is in the area, said he did not want anyone’s home to be ran through, if there are safety issues.
“Appleton Road is one of the most recognized and traveled secondary roads in our county,” he said. “We will absolutely do everyth that the county can do to make sure that the county intersection is safe.”
