Two new businesses could come to Brewton – a maker’s market and a new upscale steakhouse.

The City of Brewton held two public hearings at Monday night’s council meeting.

The first for Megan and Shannon Brantley, who own Flannel and Floral. While the business isn’t new to Brewton, the couple plans to purchase a business and have their cabinet shop in the back and a maker’s market retail store in the front.

The couple is asking for $20,000 to help with the retail space.

The couple was on hand at the meeting.

Both say they have met a plethora of amazing artists throughout their time going to shows and they want to set-up a store for locals to be able to purchase the wares created by Southern artists.

Megan Brantley said she wanted their store to be one of the things that people say there is to do in Brewton.

They are currently featured on the state tourism website, but they do not have a physical location.

Shannon Brantley said they go to Southern Makers in Montgomery, but that there is not a venue of that kind south of Montgomery.

“It’s a big deal in places such as Florence, Huntsville,” he said. “But there is nothing south of Montgomery. We want to have their stuff in our shop.”

The couple said the cabinet shop will be the meat and potatoes of the shop, but the maker’s market will serve as the tourist attraction.

They also plan to have a variety of workshops.

They are asking for the grant to help with:

• 60 feet of storefront;

• Lights;

• Wall divide;

• Restrooms;

• Electrical work;

• Painting;

• A/C;

• Porch and parking.

Shannon said they are working to finalize the purchase with the bank.

The second hearing was for William Jernigan, who purchased the Old Willies building two years ago.

His plans are to furnish, remodel and get the building ready for a restaurant in downtown Brewton.

He is asking for $60,000-$65,000 in sales tax abatements.

Jernigan said it would be a higher end steakhouse, but great service and great food.

He said his chef is a disabled veteran, who puts a lot of flare in his dishes.

Jernigan said the grant would help them finish the project and hopes to open by summer.

Jernigan said he didn’t have a name for the restaurant yet, but he plans to let the residents of the city decide.

“We’ll have a contest,” he said.
