 Books have been known to take readers to distant places and even unimaginable places. A reader can crack open a book and plunge into the plot of Moby Dick or soar above Big Ben alongside Peter Pan. It’s no mystery that books have the power to transport readers deep into their imagination.

The renovations at the Brewton Public Library just made transcending to a world of endless possibilities that much easier. The library shed its enclosed walls for open, thought provoking spaces. The floors, roof, ceilings and walls have been renovated along with the children’s room and conference room.

“It’s like the library is a brand new building,” the Brewton Public Library’s children librarian Lynn Walker said. “Once we’re open, I think we’re going to be bombarded with people.”

The library will be officially open tomorrow. The renovated library is hardly recognizable. The walls of the children’s room have been replaced with plenty of windows to open up the space. New tall tables with attached outlets have been added to the library. An employee of the library Debra Fuqua said they added the ports to the tables specifically for visitors who often had to sit on the floor near ports to charge their laptops.

Fuqua said that before the city paid to fix the roof, it used to leak.

“I love the way the city workers did the landscaping,” Fuqua said. “They have been such a help.”

Fuqua said that donations from the public paid for the new chairs and couches in the library. There were many people who helped the renovated library come together. The library employees, volunteers and inmates from the Fountain Correctional Facility have been working for weeks to get the library in great shape for the grand reopening.

“I like reading,” inmate and father James Mavigliano said. “I love helping with this project because reading books is important, especially for our children.”

Library employee Nora Campbell said she is glad to have the inmates’ help.

“They have been a great help,” Campbell said. “They helped us with moving all of the heavy furniture.”

Once the library opens, the library’s children summer programs will begin. The first program will begin tomorrow at 10 a.m. It will be an interactive performance by Michelle’s Magical Poodles. The poodles will do all sorts of crazy tricks including driving a car. The library will provide lunch for the children.
