Whether it’s your first day at your new job or your first day of the school year, you always want to come prepared and, of course, look your best. After all, first impressions are everything. The Zion Fountain African Methodist Episcopal Church’s Rev. Anthony Thames saw a need in the Brewton and East Brewton area last year. Thames said he met parents in the area who were concerned about sending their young men back to school without a haircut. Thanks to RIKO’s Barber Shop, the church was able to provide free haircuts to students from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. 

“We’ve had a beautiful turnout today,” Thames said in the full barber shop. “It’s only 9:30 a.m. and the place is packed. We feel blessed to be able to provide free haircuts for the community.” 

Godmother Monica Jones said that this event was an awesome resource for her Godchildren. A student said he was very appreciative of the haircut. 

Thames said this year only one barber agreed to lend a hand to the church. However, the barber Riko Bailey dedicated a full day of work to cutting students of all ages’ hair. 

“I appreciate being a part of the community,” Bailey said. “I’m happy to help.”

Bailey opened RIKO’s Barber Shop four months ago. The shop is located next to Jennings Park on Persimmon Street.
