Last Friday, Brewton Middle School held its annual Veterans Day program. During the program, the school honored all Veterans, deeming it, “A patriotic tribute to our American Heroes.”

The assembly held at 11 a.m. featured the BMS advanced band and singers ensemble. Both groups serenaded the audiences with an array of patriotic tunes.

Following the groups’ presentations, Senior Chief Petty Officer Barry Wood of the U.S. Navy Reserve and Brewton Elementary School’s Principal spoke to those gathered in the BMS gym.

Welcomed by BMS Principal Madelyn Cave, Wood shared his own experiences from his time in the service. “Thank you so much, you have truly done an honor to those here today,” said Wood.

Wood first enlisted in the Navy Reserve in March 1991 upon his completion of boot camp. During his time as an active reservist, he performed peacetime Seabee operations across the continental United States as well as Sasebo and Okinawa, Japan, Guam, Spain, Thailand, and Guantanamo Bay, Cuba. Wood also completed three deployments to Camp Patriot, Kuwait (2005-2006) and Kabul, Afghanistan (2013-2014) in support of Operation Enduring Freedom.

Looking out upon the crowd, Wood said, “Seeing the children in this room, you know exactly why we do what we do.”

During his speech, Wood challenged the students to examine themselves.

“Traditions help define who we are in the service. One of the best traditions is how these men and women came to be who they are today,” explained Wood.

Sharing about the core values that all men and women in the service have in common, Wood said, “I ask the students in this room, what defines you? What are your core values?”

After Wood spoke, the armed forces medley was played. Veterans in attendance were encouraged to stand as the anthem of each branch played. During this time, many stood and were recognized for their service.

Concluding the program, BMS trumpeter Logan Richbourg played Taps, honoring all Veterans.

Following the program, BMS hosted a special reception for all those in attendance.
