Lots of people flip houses to turn a profit. Habitat for Humanity remodels them, but the reward isn’t financial; as they turn houses into homes for deserving families.
A house on H.K. Mathews Drive in Brewton will be getting a complete makeover in a few days, preparing a welcome mat for its new homeowners. So Habitat needs volunteers for the face lift; contractors are a big help, but if you can hang drywall, wire a light fixture or handle a paintbrush you can pitch in.
The more volunteers, the less labor expense…which can save money for the next home.
Director of Escambia County Habitat for Humanity Lisa Tindall is excited about helping a local family fill out a change of address card. “A Habitat home is a great deal and always offers a better quality of life for our special families; those that qualify get a no-interest, twenty year mortgage on a house that’s either brand new or totally remodeled.” And most of the down payment is known as “sweat-equity,” anyone hoping to qualify in the future is required to earn it by volunteering on current projects. Along with the Feb. remodeling project, Habitat plans a new build later this spring for another family.
Most of the funds are provided by the Habitat ReStore, which sells new and used items, everything from flooring and furniture to those hidden treasures you can only find in Brewotn’s most unique store. Donations are always welcome, and really help the bottom line. Store manager Robyn Haydar says generous residents can turn their unwanted items into homes. “Before you throw it out, give us a call. We can always use more donations, especially furniture in good condition and working appliances. The less we have to buy, the more money we can generate for Habitat projects. All donations qualify as a tax deduction as well.”
The store is currently raising money in a clever way; turning the work of renowned local artist Bernice Sims into a 1,000 piece puzzle. “Customers can buy a puzzle piece for a dollar,” said Hydar, “and when we’ve sold all the pieces we’ll have a drawing.” Prizes include a $100 gift certificate to the ReStore and a framed print of Sims work, which was once used as a U.S. postage stage. Funds raised are earmarked for “Brush with Kindness,” which provides labor and a fresh coat of paint for residents whose homes need a little tender-love-and-care.
Anyone interested in volunteering or making donations can stop by the Habitat office, located in the ReStore on Douglas Ave. next to Jalisco’s restaurant. Or call 25-867-0095.
