All K-12 schools in Alabama will close at the end of Wednesday, March 18.
Gov. Kay Ivey announced the decision during a press conference held on Friday afternoon. The closure is in response to the coronavirus pandemic. Schools could potentially re-open on April 6. This decision will be made at that time.
“That gives parents three days to be thinking about child care,” Alabama State Superintendent Eric Mackey said.
Currently there are 2 confirmed cases throughout the state, and 3 potential cases. The announcement came shortly after President Trump declared a national state of emergency.
According to Mackey, all athletic events will be canceled as well during the period that schools are closed.
