The historic $2 trillion stimulus package was approved by the House of Representatives and on Fri.

The Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security (CARES) Act is now awaiting President Donald Trump’s signature.

With the United States leading the world with the most reported cases of COVID-19, citizens across the country and the economy are feeling the effects of the devastating spread.

Key elements of the package include sending checks directly to individuals and families, a major expansion of unemployment benefits, money for hard-hit hospitals and health care providers, financial assistance for small businesses and $500 billion in loans for distressed companies.

Representing Brewton’s district, Congressman Bradley Byrne (R-AL) spoke today on the floor of the House of Representatives offering his support for the CARES Act.

Congressman Byrne said,“Mr. Speaker, last week, 3.3 million Americans filed for unemployment.  Small businesses around this country are shuttered.  Millions of Americans and their children are at home, practicing social distancing, a term that few knew two weeks ago.  Countless others are on the frontlines in our hospitals, doctor’s offices, pharmacies, or simply checking us out at the grocery store.”

Reaching out to local business owners, Congressman Byrne shared his concerns.

“Yesterday, I spoke to many small businesses in my district on a call.  I was asked to give them hope.  To the American people who are watching, there is hope, and help is on the way,” he said. “There are many things in this bill I do not like. There are portions that I think are a mistake. But, colleagues, this is our time for action. Do not hold this bill up. We owe it to the citizens of this great country who are struggling. We owe action for them – today.”

In response to the passage of the CARES Act, the CEO of the Poarch Band of Creek Indians, Stephanie A. Bryan, released the following statement.

“I applaud our federal lawmakers for their actions to pass legislation that will spur the economy and provide relief to tribes during the COVID-19 pandemic. The Poarch Creek Indians have taken many precautions to protect our employees and Tribal Members, and we are thankful our lawmakers acknowledge the relief we need.  We have voluntarily closed our businesses to the public, and this legislation will assist us in continuing to provide stability to our employees during this uncertain time,” Bryan stated.

The CARES Act passed the House by Voice Vote and awaits President Trump’s signature.
