A driver crashed into the yard of St. Maurice Catholic Church's rectory before fleeing from the scene and being discovered under the bed at a friend's house Thursday, Brewton police said.
Kevin Hendrieth, 31, was driving a borrowed 1998 Mercury Sable when he ran into the yard at the church around 3:30 p.m. and nearly took out a corner of the residence there, police said.
Pastor Adrian Cook was home at the time but was not injured.
Police said Hendrieth took off on foot with officers Buddy Samuels and Hal Parker in pursuit from East Jackson Street down May Street.
Hendrieth ran to a friend's house, ran into the house and rolled under a bed, police said
Hendrieth took out three small trees and a couple of bushes before coming to a stop just inches away from the rectory, Sgt. Eric Suarez said.
Hendrieth was arrested and taken to the Escambia County Detention Center, where he later bonded out.
