A group of Brewton Elementary School students have been learning about the importance of Arbor Day. They joined with the Brewton Tree and Beautification Committee to plant a Silver Oak tree, which they call Oaky, on the school campus. Madeline Hildreth, from the Alabama Forestry Commission, presented theschool with a Tree City flag, which was put on the flagpole in front of the school.
Members of the Tree and Beautification Committee suggested that it would be interesting to see what the students have learned by having them write it in their own words.
Maggie Rowell and Christopher Guthrie, members of the class, wrote:
The tree is about 6.3 feet tall. It is a Silver Oak Tree. We decided to name it Oaky. We took a picture of Oaky. Three girls got to hold a shovel. They also brought a flag and put it on the pole. It was a white flag with a green tree with a circle around it. It also had green writing on it which said ‘Tree City U.S.A. The Arbor Day Foundation.' Then the lady talked more about trees.
We learned a lot. All, in all, we had a great time.”
Grace Ruzic and Maggie Rowell teamed up to write an Arbor Day report.
It is devoted to tree planting and premiums are given to the largest, planter by State Board of Agriculture. And that is what he wrote. All, in all, Julius Sterling Morton was a great man!
