Students and faculty members at Brewton Elementary School will soon have to say good-bye to the woman who has served as principal at the school for the last nine years.
Deborah Marriott will begin her retirement effective July 1 which is the end of the principal's current contract.
Retirement isn't a new idea for Marriott having considered the prospect in recent years.
Although this year's decision is the one that will see the end of her tenure as principal, Marriott said the decision was a difficult one to make. The support of Brewton City School's Superintendent Lynn Smith and Baxter Baker, assistant superintendent, has been one of the reasons she has stayed in her position.
Marriott will be ending her career in education having almost 20 years in administration.
Susie Collins, secretary at the school, said Marriott will certainly be missed when she begins her life in retirement.
Collins said Marriott was instrumental in providing encouragement to faculty and staff at the beginning of every school day.
Marriott's encouragement and goal-setting standards were met with hard work from students and faculty.
Marriott said the staff and employees have been a blessing to the school and to her son, Will.
Making such a drastic change might be difficult for many people, Marriott said, but she believes she is ready to take the step.
The step into the world of retirement will be a change for Marriott, but it's a change she is excited about making.
Marriott said the timing of her retirement is perfect as she begins this next phase in her life.
